The Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics within the Physics Department at the University of Strathclyde delighted to offer EPSRC-funded five-year fellowships in quantum technologies. These are available to highly motived candidates across a range of quantum optics experimental projects.
Three positions are available now within the Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics group to lead experiments in Sensing and Metrology using Quantum Technologies. The successful candidates will work alongside Prof Erling Riis, Dr Aidan Arnold, and Dr Paul Griffin in developing cutting-edge sensing technology. The positions, initially for two years, but extendable to five, will enable resourceful researchers to build world-leading experiments that have strong links to industry, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL, the UK national research lab), and the UK research funding councils. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be embedded within a major national initiative in quantum technologies, collaborating with researchers across a range of disciplines within the field of quantum sensing and metrology
The specific projects are to build next-generation experiments to develop measurement devices for time/frequency standards, inertial forces, and magnetometry. These projects will, respectively, build upon systems of cold atoms, quantum gases and Bose-Einstein condensate, and thermal atomic samples. Each project will require the applicant to design and build precise laser, vacuum, electronics and data collection systems in order to make exquisitely precise measurements through atom-laser interactions.
We strongly encourage applicants whose research interest and experience includes atomic clocks, magnetometry, and atom interferometry. The closing date for the first round of applications is the 15th October 2014. We will, however, remain open to applications from experienced researchers beyond this date.
